Shades of Brazilwood
From dark to light, Brazilwood's natural clear bright color really shines on this Columbia Finn cross roving. Brazilwood comes from a tree native to the Malay Peninsula and the thorny bark part is made into chips which are then pounded into powder ready for dyeing. The name brazil means the color of red-hot coals.

Shades of Cochineal
Purples to pinks, Cochineal comes from an insect found living on prickly pear cacti in Central & South America, Mexico and the Canary Islands. It takes 70,000 female insects to make 1 pound of dye, which makes it expensive.

Dye colors from left to right are Brazilwood, Osage Orange, Cochineal. The long lustrous Lincoln takes well to natural dyeing, producing a heathered look to your finished roving or yarn.

Over dyed Lincoln Longwool with Madder
Madder Is native to western and central Asia. Madder has been used as a dye since 3000 BC. The dye is also known as turkey red. The roots are lifted in the fall, dried and then pounded to a powder, soaked in water and then used for dyeing.
